On why I'm giving upcreated Wednesday, January 4th, 2006 7:49:35pmEchoing in the distance, your voice can fool you into thinking there's something going on outside of your head, anything at all. But it's not, and it's about time you came to that conclusion, too. Let it go, you're screaming into the wind and the deafening roar returning to your ears is not that of a crowd swayed by your argument, but the sum of a million sighs of apathy. We're still driving SUVs. Wind power is still being shot down because it drives down property values (which really bothers people who INVEST in land, rather than live or produce food on it). Abortion is still a "hot-button" issue, and yet gay marriage is also an unacceptable alternative to breeding according to most Americans, even in the "progressive" northeast. We're still putting people to death...for the crime of putting people to death. We want our cake and we want to eat it too, and we want it 5 minutes ago, and I hope we get it, and I hope we choke on every succulent morsel. Some people say that wishing for the downfall of an evil colossus that one is a part of is foolhardy, suicidal, or if they're prone to that sort of expression, it can be seen as cutting off the nose to spite the face. Honestly, I see nothing wrong with justice, and we're due for a heaping helping, folks. 9/11 was really just the beginning, because if anything, it ACCELERATED us doing the things that, as a nation, made the people who planned the whole attack so mad in the first place. And that anger, that's what we in reality like to call "justified anger," anger that comes from people you love and care about living and dying in shitty conditions, anger spouting out of you that is endless and boundless. Don't forget - there were some dudes who felt better DYING to take out some Americans than living in a world the Americans have manufactured on 9/11. I'd bet there are a lot more 4+ years down the line. I don't think I've ever met an American who felt that strongly about ANYTHING - and that goes doubly for our men and women in the armed services, lost in an illusion of technical superiority and some abstruse moral construct, who haven't been able to see past the sham of "defending freedom." I know I'm not willing to die for my convictions, and I doubt they are, either, especially since their convictions were probably spoon fed to them from birth, and always taken as gospel without any actual consideration. There's a big difference between going to Iraq to fight and going to America to fly a plane into a building. Every one of our folks over there is counting the minutes until they get shipped home - their guys bought one-way tickets, and felt like they were doing the RIGHT THING. If you can find me an American willing to do the same thing for our country, I'll show you an immigrant who doesn't take the shit that we enjoy for granted. We haven't learned our lesson, and as much as it would hurt, the collapse of this system would at least allow me to feel like we're moving in the right direction. Until then, we're just shouting in the wind. |
