I strongly disagreecreated Tuesday, July 19th, 2005 10:57:53amMy state is going to kill someone. His name is Donald Fell and a jury of his (and, presumably, my) peers thought it best to go against decades of Vermont law (and, I'd like to think, humanitarian tradition) and ship him off to death row. As the subject suggests, I strongly disagree, and it makes me very sad. I mean, where is the logic here? Are we to believe capital punishment acts as a deterrant? That it assuages the guilt of the family of the woman he murdered? Or that it's only fair recompense for his actions? I feel like the dead horse has been beaten enough on the topic, and still we dance around this idea that somehow it's "Justice" - capital J, boldfaced and concrete. And I defy that. There can be no justice, there can be no recompense for the loss of a life. One life for another doesn't balance the scales (where/whatever they might be), it just tips them even further out of balance. |
